‘Schitt’s Creek’ Star Emily Hampshire Apologizes For Dressing Up As Johnny Depp For Halloween

Schitt’s Creek star Emily Hampshire has apologized for her Halloween costume choice following criticism of her and a friend dressing up as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

The actress issued a public apology for their decision to dress up as the ex-couple.

“I want to address what is one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things I’ve ever done. For Halloween, I stupidly thought it would be funny to dress as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard,” she said in a post to Instagram. “I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe. Domestic abuse is never, ever funny. These are real issues with real people and I really regret my actions.”

Depp sued Heard for defamation in 2019 after accusing her of lying in a Washington Post article a year prior. Heard also counter-sued for defamation following comments made by Depp’s lawyer Adam Waldman.

The lawsuits ended up resulting in a highly publicized six-week trial which resulted in Depp winning the lawsuit which awarded him more than $10 million in damages. Heard partially won her counter-suit and was awarded $2 million.

In the since-deleted photos that were posted to Instagram, Hampshire is seen dressed as Depp with some of his notable tattoos being drawn on her hand.

Many took to social media to accuse Hampshire of mocking abuse and toxic relationships with the photo.

“In the future I will do better. I’m so sorry,” Hampshire concluded the Instagram post.

In March, Hampshire revealed to uInterview her favorite Schitt’s Creek scene.

“I mean for me the Cabaret episode was a dream come true, but like the bigger dream that I had for myself, I’d always wanted to play Sally Bowles,” she told uInterview exclusively. “I’d even said it in the press before and then when I was given the opportunity to play Sally as Stevie and sing ‘Maybe This Time,’ which to do it as Stevie is the better version of that song. Like that song is about maybe this time I’ll get some man and he’ll help me be great and for Stevie, it was like maybe this time I’ll be great and I love that.”
