Ryan Gosling Criticizes Academy For Not Nominating Greta Gerwig For Best Director & Margot Robbie For Best Actress
After Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were not nominated for Oscars their roles in the 2023 film Barbie, co-star Ryan Gosling issued a statement saying they deserved to be nominated.
Gosling, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role of Ken, “I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films,” Gosling said. “And I never thought I’d be saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.”
“But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film,” Gosling said. “No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”
Another cast member of Barbie, America Ferrera, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, commented on Gerwig’s snub.
“Greta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it,” she said. “Creating this world and taking something that didn’t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon. It feels disappointing to not see her on that list.”
Although the two snubbed in those categories, Robbie was still nominated for Best Picture for Barbie as a producer, while Gerwig still earned a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for the film alongside Noah Baumbach.
Barbie was the biggest movie of 2023, grossing over $1.4 billion. The film earned eight nominations at the Academy Awards.
Last week, Gosling was in the news when director Oliver Stone said he was “wasting his time” acting in Barbie.
