‘Rust’ Armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed Sues Prop Supplier Over Ammunition That Killed Halyna Hutchins

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, 24, the armorer who oversaw weapons for the movie Rust, filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against PDQ Arm & Prop company for distributing live ammunition on the set where Alec Baldwin discharged a prop gun and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, on October 21. The film director, Joel Souza, was also injured by the shooting.

During the filming of Rust, Dave Halls, an assistant director on the set, took a prop gun off a cart – where it had been placed by Gutierrez-Reed – and handed it to Baldwin during the rehearsal. The assistant director stated that it was a “cold gun,” indicating that it contained no live rounds and was safe to handle.

While Gutierrez-Reed, Halls and Baldwin are cooperating with law enforcement, investigators had sought a search warrant on Seth Kenney‘s PDQ Arm & Prop business that provided the blanks and dummy rounds. Kenney later told Good Morning America that it was “not a possibility that they came from PDQ or from myself personally. When we send dummy rounds out, they get individually rattle tested before they get sent out. So if you have a box of 50, you’ve got to do it 50 times. And then at that point, you know they’re safe to send.”

On December 1, Baldwin said that he did not pull the trigger onset and that he had “no idea” how a live bullet got onto the set.

“I would never point a gun at anyone and pull the trigger at them, never,” Baldwin told ABC News. “Someone put a live bullet in a gun, a bullet that wasn’t even supposed to be on the property. I think back, and I think of what I could have done. She was someone who was loved by everyone who worked with [Hutchins], and admired… I mean, even now I find it hard to believe that [she’s gone]. It doesn’t seem real to me.”

Hutchins’ death stunned the film industry and left her friends, family, and colleagues in shock. She was described by Baldwin as an “incredible artist.”
