Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York City, was making an appearance at a Staten Island ShopRite store for his son Andrew Giuliani’s gubernatorial campaign when he was slapped by an employee of the supermarket chain on Sunday.
Giuliani told the New York Post that the slap nearly knocked him over, and claimed the man told him “‘You’re a f–––ing scumbag,’ then he moves away so nobody can grab him. “He also said in a radio show interview that the slap felt like “somebody shot me.”
Surveillance video was later released of the altercation. While it does seem clear that Giuliani was struck unexpectedly, his recollection of the assault in subsequent interviews also appears to be slightly exaggerated when compared to the video footage.
The ShopRite employee, who is facing a second-degree assault charge for the incident, was incensed about the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe V. Wade, according to Giuliani’s comments. “The one thing he said that was political was ‘You’re going to kill women, you’re going to kill women,” Giuliani said.
