Rolling Stones Slam Donald Trump For Using “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” Without Permission

Donald Trump ended the Republican National Convention on Thursday night with the Rolling Stones hit “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” and the band took to Twitter to let their displeasure be known.

Rolling Stones Say Donald Trump Used Their Song Without Permission

“The Rolling Stones do not endorse Donald Trump. You Can’t Always Get What You Want was used without the band’s permission,” the Rolling Stones tweeted.

This is not the first time the Stones have slammed Trump for using their song. In May, the band warned Trump about using their music after he walked on stage for his Indiana primary victory speech to “Start Me Up.”

“The Rolling Stones have never given permission to the Trump campaign to use their songs. [The band] have requested that they cease all use immediately,” a rep for the Rolling Stones said in a statement.

“I have no problem with that. I like Mick Jagger,” Trump told CNBC, following the band’s statement at the time.

The Rolling Stones are one of many music artists who have asked Trump to avoid using their music while campaigning for the presidency, including Adele and R.E.M.

The Turtles reportedly argued that their song “Happy Together” at the RNC was unauthorized as well as George Harrison’s estate saying “Here Comes The Sun” being played at the RNC was “offensive.”

Law experts have encouraged political campaigns to stop using songs when an artist makes such a request, as it’s bad for both parties.

“The optics of it are so bad that there’s really not much point in continuing to use a piece of music when the musicians really don’t want you to,” copyright law expert Sherin Siy told NPR.
