Robert Yancy, the son of Natalie Cole and grandson of Nat King Cole, has died at the age of 39.

ROBERT YANCY DEAD AT 39

Yancy was found dead in his San Fernando Valley apartment on Monday evening after a friend decided to check on him. His death comes just 20 months after his mother died of congestive heart failure. It appears that Yancy died of a heart attack, which was also the cause of his father’s death back in 1985 at the age of 34.

A source says that Yancy was busy working on a documentary about his famous mother. “He told me he was very depressed about his mother’s passing, saying she was the best mom in the world and he loved her deeply and he didn’t want her legacy to fade away,” the source explained. “He wanted to remind people of how great Nat and his mom were. He felt they were underrepresented in the music world.”

One of Natalie Cole’s former back-up singers, Anita Anderson, shared the news of Yancy’s death in two tweets. “WE HAVE LOST ANOTHER GREAT YOUNG SOUL TOO SOON!! ROBERT ADAM YANCY, NATALIE COLE’ S ONLY SURVIVING SON AND ACCOMPLISHED DRUMMER HAS DIED!! REST IN PEACE As YOU JOURNEY HOME WITH MOM & DAD! AND KNOW YOU’RE ALWAYS IN OUR HEARTS SON!! LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU ALREADY!!!”
