In a new Joe Biden campaign advertisement, Robert De Niro declared that former president Donald Trump “snapped” after he lost the 2020 presidential election.

“From midnight tweets to drinking bleach to tear-gassing citizens and staging a photo-op,” De Niro recounted at the beginning of the advertisement. “We knew Trump was out of control when he was president, and then he lost the 2020 election and snapped.”

“Desperately trying to hold on to power,” he said while clips of the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack were shown in the ad. “Now he’s running again, this time threatening to be a dictator, to terminate the Constitution.”

De Niro’s “dictator” comment was in reference to his telling Fox News’s Sean Hannity during a town hall interview in December that he would only be a dictator on the first day of his presidency.

The campaign ad then showed a video of the former president saying at a rally in Dayton, Ohio, on March 16 that it would be a “bloodbath” if he lost the election.

“Trump wants revenge, and he’ll stop at nothing to get it,” the actor mentioned at the end of the ad as more clips of the Capitol attack.

The president’s campaign stated the 30-second ad was made to remind voters of Trump’s “tumultuous presidency” and his decline into “the unhinged power-hungry candidate he is today.”

De Niro reportedly had been shown the ad with a generic voiceover. Less than a day later, he told the campaign that he loved it and recorded it with his distinct voice.

On March 8, De Niro ranted about Trump on Bill Maher’s talk show, Real Time with Bill Maher, arguing that the former president is “such a mean, nasty, hateful person” who he would never portray “as an actor because” he found nothing “good” or “redeemable” about him.

De Niro and Maher discussed the election polls from The New York Times, with the talk show host eliciting his guest’s thoughts on Trump being ahead of Biden.

The actor then shifted his attention to Trump supporters, saying that these individuals “want to f— with people, screw them because they’re unhappy about something.”

He said that “[Trump’s] a sociopathic, psychopathic, malignant narcissist” and that he is “a dangerous person.”

De Niro also publicly attacked Trump while speaking on MSNBC’s The 11th Hour. During an interview, the actor warned people about the former president’s possible return to the White House if he wins the 2024 election.

He called Trump “a sick person,” “narcissistic, “a “monster” and a “stupid bully.” Despite this, he mentioned he was “tired of calling [Trump] names” during the same segment.

De Niro had then compared Trump to Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, saying that “they don’t take him seriously” and that “he looks like a clown and “acts like a clown.”
