In a town hall interview with Fox News’s Sean Hannity, former President Donald Trump addressed questions about his potential return to the Oval Office in 2025.

When asked if he would disavow any retribution against his enemies were he to re-enter the office, Trump initially avoided a direct response.

However, when pressed further, he stated that he would not be a dictator, “except for day one.”

Trump clarified that this would be for two specific issues: “I want to close the border and I want to drill, drill, drill… Other than that, I am not a dictator.”

His remarks may have been an attempt to quell concerns that have arisen in recent weeks with his authoritarian approach in a potential second term.

President Joe Biden‘s campaign promptly criticized Trump’s statements and used them as ammunition to argue against his intentions.

Biden-Harris Campaign Manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez released a statement in response, “Donald Trump has been telling us exactly what he will do if he’s reelected and tonight he said he will be a dictator on day one. Americans should believe him.”

In the interview, Trump also expressed his doubts that Biden will become the Democratic nominee in 2024 and cited concerns about Biden’s mental and physical well-being.

“I personally don’t think he makes it physically,” he said. “Mentally, I would say he’s possibly equally as bad and maybe worse.”

Trump, 77, targeted Biden’s age as the current president faces scrutiny about his abilities due to his advanced age. Biden, 81, has consistently dismissed concerns about his age and capacity to fulfill his duties effectively.

When asked about his predictions for Biden’s potential successor as the Democratic nominee in the November elections, Trump indirectly referred to California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D).

“I saw him on the debate the other night,” Trump said. “He is slick but has no facts. I thought he did well.”

Earlier that day, Biden attended a fundraiser where he mentioned that he might not run for reelection if he did not believe Trump would be the Republican nominee.

When reporters pressed him on whether he would drop out if Trump also did, Biden responded, “No, not now.”
