Rep. Dan Kildee‘s (D-Michigan) brother, Timothy Kildee, was fatally shot on Tuesday morning in Genesee County, Michigan.

County Sheriff Chris Swanson delivered the news at a press conference and revealed that the 57-year-old Timothy was allegedly shot by his son, 27, at their residence in Vienna Township, Michigan. The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, is currently in police custody.

At the press conference, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton outlined the potential charges that the suspect may face, which include open murder, carjacking, armed robbery, using a firearm during the commission of a felony, carrying a concealed weapon and a possible motor vehicle infraction for the ensuing crash. Leyton’s statement underscores the severity of the incident and the legal ramifications that the suspect may encounter.

Upon news of the shooting, Kildee, 65, was notified by Sheriff Swanson while in Washington, D.C. He is now in Michigan to be with his family. In a heartfelt post to X, Kildee expressed his family’s grief and devastation and emphasized their profound loss. He requested privacy for his family and expressed gratitude for the community’s support.

Authorities received a call about a domestic dispute on Columbine Street in Burton, Michigan, at approximately 2:50 a.m. Sheriff Swanson disclosed that a firearm was present during the verbal altercation. Following the dispute, Timothy’s son left the house on foot and contacted his mother, Timothy’s ex-wife. According to Sheriff Swanson, the son was later picked up by his mother and they started for Timothy’s residence in Vienna Township.

While en route, the suspect abruptly jumped out of the moving vehicle. Subsequently, the parents embarked on a search for their son. Eventually, the father returned to the house alone, and Timothy’s other son, who was asleep in the residence, notified the authorities of the unusual circumstances. Sheriff Swanson revealed that another family member in the basement overheard a confrontation and a demand from the suspect for the victim’s wallet and keys. These belongings were later found in the possession of the suspect following the incident.

According to the account provided to the authorities, the other son reported he heard a gunshot, which is believed to be the fatal shot that claimed Timothy’s life. In a desperate attempt to flee the scene, the 27-year-old suspect commandeered the victim’s car and drove away at high speed. A mere eight minutes after the shooting, the suspect collided with another vehicle, which resulted in serious injuries for himself and minor injuries for the occupants of the other car.

While an investigation is underway, Sheriff Swanson confirmed that no charges have been filed thus far. There are suspicions of possible substance abuse by the suspect, which will be verified through toxicology reports.
