In 2020, movie theater chains were hit with a crippling blow when the COVID-19 pandemic swept the globe. Nearly all movies were delayed from their release dates either by a few months or an entire year. As a result, movie theaters are in more trouble than they have ever been before.
Like many movie theater companies, Regal Cinemas was forced to close their theaters as a result of the pandemic and have been losing a tremendous amount of money as a result. After a few months, movie theater companies have been reopening a select number of their theaters so that fans can slowly return. However, after several potential blockbuster films were delayed to 2021, it became unlikely that reopening several of the movie theaters throughout the United States would help the business that much. This became even more apparent when Regal Cinemas announced that they would close all 536 of their theaters throughout the United States starting on October 8. This decision was made by Regal Cinemas after it was reported that the James Bond film No Time to Die would push its release date of November 25, 2020 to April 2, 2021. This delay announcement served as the final straw for Regal Cinemas, as not only will all of its theaters throughout the United States close, but also all of the Regal Cinemas theaters throughout the United Kingdom as well.
