Reese Witherspoon stepped out on the red carpet for the Wall Street Journal Magazine Innovators Awards, accompanied by her 21-year-old son, Deacon Phillippe.

Witherspoon wore a black one-shouldered dress with black heels and gold hoop earrings. Deacon, whom Witherspoon shares with her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe, wore a navy suit accompanied by black loafers.

The event was held at the Museum of Modern Art. Other celebrities in attendance at the event included Ariana Grande, Salma Hayek, Emily Ratajkowski, Penelope Cruz and many more.

Witherspoon’s boyfriend, Oliver Haarmann, was notably missing from the event. Witherspoon and Haarmann, who is a minority co-owner of the NHL’s New York Islanders, as well as a founding partner of Searchlight Capital, have been casually dating on the down low since they revealed their relationship earlier this year.

The romance between the two developed from a friendship and became public in July, but it is unclear when the couple met and when the nature of their relationship shifted.

There has been much criticism of Witherspoon’s tendency to bring nepo baby Deacon, a budding musician, to high-end events in addition to creating various connections for him. Deacon also received major backlash after he gave a tour of his New York City apartment on TikTok and flaunted a cavalier attitude towards the immensely expensive space about the wealth he acquired from his parents.

A long-standing issue in Hollywood, in late 2022 debate about the role nepotism plays in the workforce exploded, and celebrities like Maya Hawke and Zoë Kravitz were criticized for their success in the industry as their parents influenced their fame and helped them make connections when they were starting out. It begs the question: is a person only worthy of fame when they have to overcome adversity to achieve a new status?
