R. Kelly addressed the reports that he has a transgender son for the first time in a radio interview on Sunday.

R. Kelly Opens Up About Transgender Son

Chicago’s WGCI was interviewing Kelly at Summer Jam 2014 when host Nina Chantele asked him – somewhat indelicately – about his son Jay Kelly. "There [are] reports of your daughter becoming, you know, your son," Chantele said. "Would you like to address that? Because … a lot of blogs are saying that you're not addressing it."

In response, Kelly expressed some frustration with an interview, which was ostensibly supposed to focus on his music, starting with a question about his child.

"You don't wanna really open it up with saying my daughter's becoming my son. You know what I'm saying?” asked Kelly, adding, “Always believe what you see, with your own eyes, that is. Always believe what you see. That's the best way to go about this business. I've heard a lot of things about a lot of people, and it was never true."

Kelly opened up later on in the interview with WGCI, talking about what it means to be a parent and highlighting the need to support your children.

“You save money so your kids can go to college," the singer said. "No matter what they are or who they are, they're still your kids, you love them, you know? You've got to support them. You want to support them…. At the end of the day it's not about me no more. It's about three lovely, lovely kids that I am in love with and that's in love with me."

Not having received a definitive statement from Kelly in which he expressly said he supported his son’s desire to fully physically transition, co-host Tony Sculfield pressed him further. "Even when you see it with your own eye, you gotta know [there's] a backstory, [there's] a background,” said Kelly, being somewhat vague again. “You can't judge nobody that you don't understand."

Jay Kelly Comes Out As Transgender

Jay Kelly, R. Kelly’s 14-year-old child with Andrea Kelly, came out publicly as transgender earlier this month on his Ask.fm profile.

“I would look up like boy changes to girl, and girl changes to boy, and I’m like wow, there’s people who feel EXACTLY the way I feel. And then I knew like that’s what transgender is,” he said. “I believe I am a boy and want surgery, and the medication to help me [be] who I was supposed to be.”

Jay Kelly said that although his mother and sister had shown nothing but love and support for him, his father, R. Kelly, had not yet reached out to him.
