Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton announced June 7 – what would have been Prince’s 58th birthday – to be a holiday, recognized statewide, in honor of the musician.
As of this Monday, after the signing of a proclamation, June 7 is officially “Prince Day” in the state.
Minnesotans are reportedly encouraged to wear purple in celebration of the new holiday.
Prince returned to his home state to settle in his Paisley Park compound in Chanhassen, Minnesota, in 1988.
Inducted in 2004, the legend’s birthday will also be celebrated at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, with a “Let’s Go Crazy” dance party.
To mark his birthday, the streaming service Tidal added 15 LPs to their digital catalogue of Prince’s lesser-known works. This includes remix collections like 1999: The New Master and Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic.
To add to the celebrations, the BET awards revealed the details of their Prince tribute. Performances are expected from D’Angelo, the Roots, Sheila E., Janelle Monae and more. The show is set to take place June 26.
These festivities all follow Spike Lee’s Prince party attended by hundreds in Brooklyn this past Saturday.
Prince died in his home on April 21 of this year. The cause of death was an overdose of the drug Fentanyl.
