Prince William and Kate Middleton visited Sunderland, England, today to see the city’s vibrant culture and engineering talent.
Their Royal Highnesses started off at the Fire Station, which is the city’s center for the arts. “Local children gives displays of music, dance & drama for The Duke and Duchess.@FireStationSun has an exciting arts programme for young people, including storytelling, street-dance & aerial dancing,” wrote the Kensington Palace official Twitter account. They stayed for a performance from a troupe and spoke with community members involved in the project.
Also while there, Middleton, who is now about seven months pregnant with the couple’s third child, received a henna tattoo from a local artist. Eighteen-year-old Shajida Begum drew a flower design on the Duchess’ right hand.
Next, they toured the new Northern Spire Bridge, which is set to open later this year. The 1,550-ton structure is actually taller than Big Ben and “weighs the equivalent of 125 double decker buses,” according to another tweet. The bridge will hopefully prove new jobs and investments in the city, and link the city center to the Port of Sunderland.
