PricewaterhouseCoopers Will Continue As Oscars Accounting Firm, Cellphones Banned

After the major gaffe at this year’s Oscars, accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers will continue working for the awards show.

PWC WILL CONTINUE AS OSCARS ACCOUNTANCY FIRM

PwC handed over the wrong envelope when it came time to announce the Best Picture winner, causing Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty to erroneously announce La La Land as the winner, when the award really belonged to Moonlight. The firm immediately took responsibility and apologized for the mistake.

PwC has overseen the Oscars voting process for 83 years. The fault for the incident fell on associate Brian Cullinan, who apparently had been using his phone to take photos of the celebrities backstage. He posted a photo of Emma Stone just three minutes before the Best Picture blunder.

As a result, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Cheryl Boone Isaacs said that PwC had made a “presentation of revised protocols and ambitious controls” following the incident. She also admitted that the Academy had been “unsparing in our assessment that the mistake made by representatives of the firm was unacceptable.”

As such, mobile phones and other devices will be banned by PwC officials, and they will have to turn them in before the accountants go backstage.
