President Barack Obama called California Attorney General Kamala Harris to apologize for having dubbed her the “best-looking attorney general in the country.”

Obama’s said in remarks on Thursday: “You have to be carful to, first of all, say she is brilliant and she is dedicated and she is tough, and she is exactly what you’d want in anybody who is administering the law, and making sure that everybody is getting a fair shake. She also happens to be, by far, the best looking attorney general in the country.”

White House press secretary Jay Carney, during his daily press briefing, addressed Obama’s gaffe, and stated that the president had reached out to Harris with an apologetic phone call later on Thursday evening. “He apologized for it and regrets the distraction it caused,” Carney said.

Obama’s comment about Harris came during a speech at a fundraiser on Thursday. Many regarded the president addressing her looks as sexist and ultimately demeaning towards a woman who has achieved so much in her career.
