Disney plans to make a live-action Pinocchio film, the latest of its animated classics the studio wants to reimagine.
The live-action Pinocchio project was announced Wednesday. Peter Hedges (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, About a Boy) will pen the screenplay for Disney’s adaptation. Though Hedges has directed numerous films (Pieces of April, Dan in Real Life, The Odd Life of Timothy Green) it’s not believed that he will helm the picture.
Pinocchio was Disney’s second animated feature, following Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The movie was based off of Carlo Collodi’s 1883 children’s book The Adventures of Pinocchio that followed a poor woodcarver and the puppet of his own creation.
Disney has most recently announced the development of live-action movie versions of Winnie the Pooh, Mulan and Dumbo. The studio had previously released adaptions of The Jungle Book and The Beauty and the Beast, which will hit theaters in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
