Pink Floyd has agreed to sell their music catalog and name and likeness to Sony Music for approximately $400 million.

After a deal that was reported to have been years in the making, the British rock band finally agreed to part ways with its music rights. Sony’s ownership of the band’s likeness allows it to profit from the sale of merchandise, television spin-offs and films.

While Pink Floyd has given up much of their brand, the band’s songwriting, which individual writers hold, remains intact.

Before the deal with Sony, the band had tried for at least two years to sell their music catalog, talking to big-time companies such as Warner Music, BMG and Hipgnosis.

Over the past several years, Sony has spent over a billion dollars on catalogs from Bob Dylan to Bruce Springsteen.

The band was set to close a deal in 2022, but fighting between members – mainly over Roger Waters’ controversial statements about Israel and Ukraine and support for Russia – complicated the deal.

Pink Floyd vocalist and guitarist David Gilmour previously shared that his reasoning for wanting to sell the catalog was to not “burden my kids with that whole legacy” and  “to be rid of the decision-making and the arguments that are involved with keeping it going.”
