Newly released photos of the Liverpool set have revealed that filming for the upcoming The Batman movie, starring Robert Pattinson, has resumed. The film – and the new interpretation of the iconic anti-hero – was announced earlier this year, but postponed due to the pandemic.
Based on the trailer, fans have gotten excited for the film’s apparent darker take on the franchise, which echoes themes in earlier movies The Dark Knight and Joker. Though the movie’s plot has been kept secret, fans know that Catwoman, played by Zoë Kravitz, will play a part in it, as will villains Penguin and Carmine Falcone, played by Colin Farell and John Turturro respectively.
Pattison, who will be playing Batman himself, has repeatedly expressed excitement for his new role – as well as anxiety about whether or not he will impress the character’s massive fan base. The role is proving to be a challenging one for the actor, partially because he contracted COVID-19 on set and shut down production in September, but also because he has to learn how to portray the character, according to director Matt Reeves.
“It’s a criminological experiment,” Reeves said of the role the recent DC Comic’s FanDome event. “[Batman is] trying to figure out what he can do to change this place. He’s seeing he’s not having any of the effect he wants to have.”
Nevertheless, Pattison fans have nothing to worry about as filming resumes, for he has famously announced that he has a back up plan for if the movie fails.
“Porn,” Pattison said of his alternate career plans in an interview with The Guardian. “But art house porn.”
The box office will ultimately decide if Pattison is a good fit for the role when The Batman is released in March 2022.
