Showtime Announces ‘Dexter’ Reboot With Michael C. Hall Set To Reprise Starring Role

Showtime has ordered a 10-part reboot for the hit series Dexter starring Michael C. Hall. Hall is set to reprise his role as the eponymous vigilante serial killer, with Clyde Phillips set to return as showrunner.

The co-president of Showtime’s entertainment wing, Gary Levine, revealed the news of the show’s reboot in a statement. “We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series,” he said. “Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can’t wait to shoot it and show it to the world!”

The original drama series aired from 2006 to 2013 and was adapted from Jeffrey Linday’s similarly named book series. The show took many liberties with the plot as Phillips veered Dexter into a more screen-friendly portrayal during his five season stint as showrunner.

The fan base’s approval of the show declined after Phillips’s parting, though Hall’s portrayal remained consistent. In 2014 during an interview with the Daily Beast where topics regarding the show’s disappointing ending and poor reviews were brought up. The actor said, “Just inherently because of how long we’d done it, because of the storytelling capital we’d spent, because our writers may have been gassed. Maybe some people wanted a more satisfying—maybe they wanted a happy ending for him, either a happy ending or a more definitive sense of closure. They wanted him to die or something, but I think the fact that he’s sort of exiled in a prison of his own making is, for my money, pretty fitting.”

The final season saw Dexter faking his own death and working as a lumberjack while his son and then love interest escaped to South America.
