Despite being named LIV Golf’s first champion in 2022, Dustin Johnson was not the main attraction for some fans this year.

Janet Gretzky, Johnson’s mother-in-law, posted a photo on Instagram of a fan’s T-shirt that said, “Hey DJ, we came to see Paulina LIV 2023,” next to a picture of a bikini-clad Paulina. The funny message was in reference to Johnson’s wife, Paulina Gretzky.

Paulina is also the daughter of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. She married Johnson in 2022.

On the Netflix docuseries, Full Swing, which provides a behind-the-scenes look at the golfers and tournaments of the PGA Tour, Gretzky talked about her husband’s decision to move from PGA to LIV Golf.

She explained that Johnson made the controversial choice for his family. The couple shares two young children, ages 5 and 8.

One of the major draws to joining the Saudi Arabia investment fund’s golf tour is that Johnson doesn’t have to play in as many tournaments per year. LIV Golf also only has three rounds per tournament, which is shorter than the PGA Tour, allowing Johnson more free time to be with his family.

Paulina continued, stating, “Of course, I get what everyone’s saying, but my dad being a hockey player – I’m sure as a kid, there were times when I’m like, ‘Why does my dad have to play on my birthday?’ This is about Dustin and the kids and me and taking care of us and being there with us.”

It’s also notable that LIV Golf provides payouts to golfers for joining the tour. Last year, Johnson reportedly earned $125 million to switch tours and received $35 million in winnings.
