Oscar Pistorius’ Family Rebuts Claims He’s Suicidal After Murder of Girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp
Oscar Pistorius, rumored to be suicidal after shooting girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, is apparently not contemplating ending his life, according to members of his family.
Pistorius was alleged to be suicidal in a BBC3 report on Monday that quoted a family friend of the “Blade Runner.” "I would say that, just speaking to him, he is a broken man. I would go as far as to say that he could be on the verge of suicide. It really worries me," Mike Azzie told the network for an upcoming documentary.
Arnold Pistorius, the Olympian’s uncle with whom he is currently living, replied to the claim in a statement released later that day. "Oscar, broken as he currently is, believes he has a purpose in life and is working towards that,” he said. “Media reports to the contrary are untrue."
Authorities charged Pistorius with the premeditated murder of model girlfriend Steenkamp, whom he shot and killed on Valentines Day, Feb. 14, in his Pretoria, South Africa home. The prosecution, hurt by a scandal involving a lead investigator on the case, was unable to provide the necessary evidence to prevent Pistorius’ bail. They believe Pistorius intentionally shot Steenkamp as she hid from him in his master bathroom after a volatile argument.
Pistorius maintained throughout the hearings that he mistook his girlfriend for an intruder, and took decisive action – feeling vulnerable without his prosthetics. His lawyers have been trying to weaken the restrictions placed on him by his bail conditions, which include: not being able to return to his Pretoria home, giving up his passport, not going near an airport and not consuming alcohol.
