Opera Singer Who Drove Through Mar-a-Lago Checkpoint Found Not Guilty By Insanity

Hannah Roemhild, an opera singer who led police officers on a brief chase through Palm Beach two years ago, during which she drove through a checkpoint set up in anticipation of Donald Trump’s arrival to the Mar-a-Lago resort, has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Roemhild’s plea was accepted during a hearing on Tuesday where she participated via Zoom from her home state of Connecticut. Roemhild’s attorneys claimed that she has a history of mental illness and hadn’t been taking her medication prior to the chase on Jan 31, 2020.

Officers first noticed Roemhild when she pulled into the parking lot of The Breakers, a luxury hotel, and began yelling at guests while standing on top of her Jeep. She then sped away when a Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant attempted to stop her and drove dangerously through downtown Palm Beach before approaching the Mar-a-Lago checkpoint.

Roemhild apparently nearly hit two Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputies and a Secret Service angel as she sped through the checkpoint. Officers fired at her back window, shattering it but leaving her unharmed.

She then went to pick up her mother at the Palm Beach International Airport. Roemhild was then arrested when the two arrived at a nearby motel. After she was arrested, she told the police that people were trying to kill her.

Per the plea agreement, Roemhild will be required to undergo psychiatric treatment and must submit a monthly blood test to confirm she has resumed taking her medication.
