Obamas To Stay In Washington After His Term Ends

President Barack Obama may remain in Washington, D.C. after wrapping up his second term in office for the sake of his youngest daughter.

Obamas Could Stay In Washington

The Obamas stand to become one of the few families to remain in the nation's capitol following their time in the White House. The president revealed that he and Michelle Obama's daughter Sasha might want to stay put to finish out her remaining years in high school at D.C.'s Sidwell Friends School instead of returning to the family’s native Chicago.

“We gotta make sure that she’s doing well . . . until she goes off to college,” Obama told Barbara Walters in an interview for ABC News. “Sasha will have a big say in where we are.”

If Obama were to remain in Washington, he would be the first president to do so since Woodrow Wilson, who was terminally ill at the time. Typically, ex-presidents return to their home states and carve out their new lives away from the country’s political hub. Former president George W. Bush’s post-presidency life down in Texas has seen him most notably take up painting.

Why Ex-Presidents Leave Washington

Sticking around D.C. isn’t thought to be the best move for a president, especially if the next president could be inheriting problems of the former. “[It’s] a terrible idea and I can’t imagine it will last very long,” Stephen Hess, a presidential scholar at the Brookings Institution, told The Washington Post. “Once you’re in Washington you are somehow connected to every problem that your predecessor is going to be confronting. And you will be asked to say something each time your name comes up, given that you will have reporters camping out on your doorstep.”

Obama’s reality as a parent to two daughters – Sasha, 12, and Malia, 15 – might not allow him to make a hasty exit, however. While Malia will be off to college by the time her father’s presidency is over, Sasha will be in the thick of high school, having spent eight years in school and making friends in the area. Escaping Washington might not be an option for the POTUS for a couple more years. Meanwhile, he and Michelle will likely keep their home in Hyde Park for when the return is possible.
