Statues of a naked Donald Trump were erected in a handful of cities Thursday, including one in New York City that was removed after two hours with an amusing statement from New York City Parks.
After removing the Naked Donald Trump statue from Manhattan’s Union Square Park, New York City Parks issued a statement that seemed to gently mock the intentionally insignificant representation of a part of the NYC real estate mogul’s anatomy.
“NYC Parks stands firmly against any unpermitted erection in city parks,” reads the statement, which added, “No matter how small.”
A Cleveland-based artist who is a member of the anarchist collective INDECLINE came through with the five nude sculptures of Trump, which were installed in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Cleveland and Seattle.
“It is through these sculptures that we leave behind the physical and metaphorical embodiment of the ghastly soul of one of America’s most infamous and reviled politicians,” INDECLINE said in its statement, adding that they will do all they can to ensure that Trump “is never installed in the most powerful political and military position in the world.”
A spokesperson for INDECLINE further explained the reasoning behind the project.
“Like it or not, Trump is a larger-than-life figure in world culture at the moment,” the spokesman told The Washington Post. “Looking back in history, that’s how those figures were memorialized and idolized in their time — with statues.”
