Nintendo recently shared its 2017 earnings release on January 31, summarizing their current financial situation after a successful year.
The Nintendo Switch was, without question, the biggest product Nintendo launched in 2017, ushering in the Kyoto-based company’s next hardware generation. Although we’ve gotten reports throughout 2017 affirming the Switch was performing well at retail, we now have numbers to gauge just how well it’s doing. To start, the Switch hardware has sold 14.86 million units worldwide, already beating Nintendo’s previous console, the Wii U, whose lifetime sales stagnated at 13.56 million.
In regard to its software, the Switch has sold 52.57 million units worldwide, already over halfway to beating the Wii U’s lifetime record at 101.65 million units. Super Mario Odyssey is Nintendo’s highest-selling Switch title, having sold over 9.07 million copies worldwide. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sits in second place at 7.33 million copies, with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild resting at 6.70 million.
January may prove to be somewhat slower for the Switch, as Nintendo did not release any major titles. However, re-releases of Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2, the latter formally being a Wii U-exclusive, will join the Switch lineup on February 16, with Nintendo’s next major Switch title, Kirby Star Allies, launching on March 16. Nintendo Labo, a kid-friendly learning series, will launch for the Switch on April 20, soon being followed by a port of the critically acclaimed Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on May 4. Additionally, Nintendo plans to release Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition and Mario Tennis Aces sometime during the spring season.
Nintendo’s other incumbent gaming platform, the Nintendo 3DS family, has sold 71.99 million units worldwide while accumulating a software total of 360.50 million. Specifics for the Super NES Classic Edition were not divulged, though Nintendo did confirm it was “a hit.” Similarly, Nintendo’s smartphone endeavors – including Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp – garnered 29.1 billion yen, which roughly translates to $265 million.
