The Nikon D500 dSLR was developed for serious and professional photographers in need of a lighter camera, but who want high-quality images. The streamlined D500 is not only lighter, it’s smaller than a full frame model and has the focal length magnification of the DX-format sensor.
Hailed as the little sister to the full-frame Nikon D5, this model is fast and possesses excellent image quality and continuous shooting. The camera really delivers on color production and white balance under different conditions. It also packs in 4K video support — an added bonus for the price. The D500 has the same autofocus and metering systems of the D5, as well as a 20.9 megapixel CMOS sensor and a touchscreen. There are two card slots: one for SD-type media and the other for XQD cards. The camera kit comes with the DX 16-80mm f2.8-4mm lens.

But for all of these pros, there are a few drawbacks reviewers have picked up on. The camera’s Live View autofocus leaves much to be desired and wireless file transfer is a headache. In theory, the company’s SnapBridge technology should allow for the seamless transfer of files between the camera and your smart device, but users have reported frustration with this feature.
Still, the D500’s pros strongly outweigh the cons. The video feature really is phenomenal for the price. Users can shoot 4K UHD video for up to 29 minutes with the D500. The D5 can only shoot such high-resolution video for up to three minutes. Lower resolution shooting is also available. Electronic vibration reduction allows for hand-held shooting minus the effects of the camera shaking.
