Nick Offerman came out swinging against the homophobic hate he’s received over his role in The Last of Us.
The hate was directed specifically at Offerman’s stand-alone episode “Long, Long Time” in the Netflix series The Last of Us, in which he starred alongside Murray Bartlett.
Offerman recently won Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series at the Independent Spirit Awards. When he went up on stage to accept his award he began with, “Thank you so much, Film Independent. I’m astonished to be in this category, which is bananas.”
He went on to say, “Thanks to HBO for having the guts to participate in this storytelling tradition that is truly independent. Stories with guts that when homophobic hate comes my way and says, ‘Why did you have to make it a gay story?’ We say, ‘Because you ask questions like that.'”
“It’s not a gay story, it’s a love story, you a——,” Offerman summed up.
In addition to this award, Offerman also won an Emmy for his role on the show. The series is centered around the zombie apocalypse and the characters Bill and Frank (played by Offerman and Bartlett) and their decades-long love saga.
This episode generated a lot of social media attention when it began streaming.
In addition, Offerman said he and his Parks and Rec co-star, Amy Poehler, are interested in doing a possible reboot of the show.
