Jonas was named the International Artist of the Year at the 2016 iHeartRadio MMVAs. Upon taking the stage to accept the award, Jonas turned his attention to the dozens victims of gun violence at a popular Orlando gay club named Pulse, as well as the tragic shooting of singer Christina Grimmie in the Florida city.
“It’s been a tough couple of weeks, a lot of hate and violence in the world, but it’s moments like this where we can all come together and celebrate the good times and be full of joy and happiness,” Jonas said. “It’s a beautiful thing so thank you for this.”
“I dedicate this to all the families and victims of the shootings recently,” he went on. “We love you and we have not forgotten.”
Last week, Jonas, an outspoken ally of the LGBT community, spoke at a vigil for those who were killed in the mass shooting that was held in New York City.
“We have a responsibility to speak up about things we’re passionate about, regardless of our platform, how many followers we have,” he said during a radio interview with Elvis Duran. “I cannot imagine the pain that the families of the victims feel and I humbly say that I’m here to support in any way that I can, and I’m so, so sorry for them.”
