Rookie coach Nick Jonas got to use the iconic red swivel chair for the first time last night on the Season 18 premiere of The Voice.
The 27-year-old Jonas Brother was parachuted into the job, literally. In a promotion for the season premiere, Jonas can be seen arriving via parachute onto the set. He then takes off his jumpsuit to reveal a dashing tuxedo.
“This is gonna be a long season,” Blake Shelton says in the clip.
Fellow host John Legend seemed to have it out for Jonas from the start. “Nick is the new guy,” Legend stated. “So I’m going to use my block because I can tell that he’s a threat… It’s the newbie treatment, Nick. But it’s always a friendly rivalry.”
The Legend vs. Jonas rivalry officially began when contestant Nelson Cade III performed a cover of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Pride and Joy.” Legend, Jonas and Kelly Clarkson all turned for Cade.
Jonas told Cade, “I’m jealous that they get to fight for you.”
Ultimately, Cade selected Legend for his musical talent along with his connections to Cade’s hero, Stevie Wonder.
“Stevie is a very good friend of mine. I’m just telling the truth, he sang at my wedding. If you happen to be on Team Legend, we could reunite you guys,” Legend told Cade.
“Oh lord… he’s just dropping the names,” teased Clarkson.
Shortly afterward, Jonas added first singer to his team, sixteen-year-old Tate Brusa who performed a rendition of Ed Sheeran‘s “Perfect.” Jonas took to the stage with a guitar to help Brusa sing through his voice cracking, something Jonas says he experienced during his days in the Jonas Brothers. He advised the singer to stand straight and focus on opening up through the vowels in the song.
Jonas also stole contestant Joanna Serenko from Legend’s team after everyone believed she would choose Legend as her coach.
“The one that got away. Nick fought for her and won his first four-chair-turn… I’m still a little bitter about that one,” said Legend.
Jonas might have a leg up on Legend and the rest of the coaches because of his career experiences and musical achievements. Jonas has performed with a group (the Jonas brothers), as a solo artist, and on a Broadway stage.
