Kirk Douglas, one of the most prominent actors of the mid-20th century, left the bulk of his $80 million estate to the charity he co-founded, the Douglas Foundation. The actor died on February 5 at the age of 103.
Douglas founded the Douglas Foundation with his wife Anne in 1964. Douglas wanted $50 million to be given away to various charities through this foundation. The nonprofit organization benefits the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, The Kirk and Anne Douglas Childhood Center and a St. Lawrence University scholarship for underprivileged students.
According to the foundation’s website, Kirk founded this organization after experiencing poverty during his youth as “the son of immigrants who migrated from Russia in the early 20th century.”
Kirk Douglas has left no money to his famous son, Michael Douglas, who is estimated to be worth $278 million himself. He does not seem to mind, Michael praised his father’s charitable ways in an Instagram post following his death.
