Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter wrote a solemn tribute to his younger brother Aaron Carter, who passed away over the weekend.

The cause of death is reportedly still being determined, but Nick wrote “addiction and mental illness is the real villain here,” as part of his post about Aaron.

Aaron was found dead by a housekeeper in his bathtub in his Lancaster, California residence. She called police and Aaron was pronounced dead at the scene.

He acknowledged that they had a “complicated” relationship, but said he always loved Aaron.

“I have always held on to the hope that he would somehow, someday want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed,” he wrote.

Aaron struggled with addiction and legal issues which were frequently outlined in the media.

Nick Carter even once took out a temporary restraining order against Aaron in 2019 because he allegedly threatened to attack his then-pregnant wife.

The singer’s twin sister Angel was also naturally mourning her sibling.

“I loved you beyond measure,” Angel began her message on social media. “You will be missed dearly. My funny, sweet Aaron, I have so many memories of you and I, and I promise to cherish them.”

It’s known that the Carters grew up in an unstable environment due to their parents Jane Elizabeth Carter and Robert encouraging them intensely to pursue acting and singing careers at young ages, and also fighting with each other violently quite frequently.

Aaron also accused his parents of using his earnings as a child star to purchase several properties, and not saving an adequate amount for him, causing extensive financial struggles in the later part of his life.
