‘White Lotus’ & ‘Banshees Of Inisherin’ Lead With Most 2023 Golden Globe Nominations

On Monday morning, Selenis Levya and George Lopez‘s daughter, Mayan Lopez, announced the 2023 Golden Globe nominations. Mayan stepped in for George after the comedian tested positive for Covid-19.

Dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin was the most nominated film of the year, receiving eight nods. Biopic Elvis, the popular sci-fi movie Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Steven Spielberg‘s coming-of-age drama, The Fabelmans, all followed close behind with several nominations.

As far as the TV portion of the awards, satirical drama The White Lotus, Quinta Brunson‘s clever sitcom, Abbott Elementary, comedy horror show Wednesday and comedic murder mystery Only Murders In the Building were recognized with nods in multiple categories.

The Golden Globes still have a lot of recovering to do following the racial and misconduct scandals of the last few years. Just before the award show in 2021, an exposé by the Los Angeles Times revealed that not one of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s 87 voting members was Black.

At the time, Black Widow actress Scarlett Johansson also accused the HFPA of hounding her with “sexist questions and remarks that bordered on sexual harassment.”

Spotlight actor Mark Ruffalo spoke out against the problematic award show on social media. “Now is the time to step up and right the wrongs of the past,” he wrote in a May 7, 2021, Twitter post. “Honestly, as a recent winner of a Golden Globe, I cannot feel proud or happy about being a recipient of this award.”

Tom Cruise even returned his three trophies in protest the same year.

NBC notably chose not to air the show in 2022 because, as they said in a statement, “Change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right.”

In response, the HFPA has added 21 journalists and 103 voters. They say now, more than 10 percent of voters are Black.

Comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host the return of the Golden Globe Awards this year, which will air on Tuesday, Jan. 10 on NBC and Peacock.
