A concertgoer who attended Friday night’s Astroworld Festival tragedy has filed a lawsuit against Travis Scott and Live Nation.
Manuel Souza attended the festival and “suffered serious bodily injuries when the uncontrolled crowd at the concert knocked him to the ground and trampled him,” the lawsuit stated. Souza is being represented by the law firm Kherkher Garcia.
Souza is suing Scott and Live Nation, the entertainment company, and concert promoter Scoremore and others involved in setting up the event.
There have been eight confirmed deaths and hundreds of others injured. Videos from concert attendees on social media showed the chaos that unfolded Friday night, which included people being trampled and yelling for the show to be stopped.
Those who attended described the situation as traumatizing, with many witnesses saying they saw lifeless bodies being trampled as the show continued. The concert started at 9:00 p.m. and continued until 10:10 p.m. Officials received reports of multiple injuries 40 minutes before the concert ended and declared the festival a “mass casualty event” at 9:30 p.m.
“Defendants failed to properly plan and conduct the concert in a safe manner. Instead, they consciously ignored the extreme risks of harm to concertgoers, and, in some cases actively encouraged and fomented dangerous behaviors,” the lawsuit said. “Their gross negligence caused Plaintiff serious injuries.
Souza is seeking “monetary relief of over $1,000,000” in damages.
Live Nation released a statement on Friday night’s events and said, “Heartbroken for those lost and impacted at Astroworld last night. We will continue working to provide as much information and assistance as possible to the local authorities as they investigate the situation.”
Scott has canceled his upcoming concert in Las Vegas and has spoken out about the event, sharing his condolences online and offering to pay for the funeral costs of the victims from his concert.
