An online petition has surfaced for the return of Netflix’s Sense8 after it was canceled last week.
The series, created by Lana and Lilly Wachowski of Matrix fame, has been celebrated for its inclusiveness and message of global interconnectivity. Its cast is ethnically, racially, and sexually diverse, and includes a transgender character whose storyline does not simply revolve around their being trans.
The cancelation came as a shock to many devoted fans. “The cancellation of Sense8 – season 3 has been completely unexpected,” reads the Change.org petition. “We don’t know any reasons yet, however it’s quite strange that a show that has received such positive response from a wide and heterogeneous audience, gets cancelled.” As of this writing, the petition has earned over 412,000 signatures of its requested 500,000.
Netflix does not release any streaming numbers, so the reason for the cancelation is unclear. One possibility is the high production cost for the series, which shoots in multiple international locations.
This is the second prominent petition for a show, after ABC’s Last Man Standing was canceled, and fans have been vying for it to be reinstated via petitioning the network.
