It’s been almost a month since Roseanne Barr made a racist tweet towards Valerie Jarrett, now in her first interview since then she is calling it an “embarrassing mistake.”
Barr appeared in an interview for Rabbi Shmuley Boteach‘s podcast where she explains that she regretted her actions that turned her into a “hate magnet.”
“I apologize to anyone who thought, or felt offended and who thought that I meant something that I, in fact, did not mean,” Barr said in the interview. “It was my own ignorance, and there’s no excuse for that ignorance.”
As the interview continued, Barr began to get more emotional about the whole controversy. As she broke down in tears she says she’s sorry she was “so unclear and stupid.” “I’m a lot of things, a loud mouth and all that stuff,” Barr said. “But I’m not stupid for God’s sake. I never would have wittingly called any black person and say they are a monkey. I just wouldn’t do that. I didn’t do that. And people think that I did that and it just kills me. I’m just so sorry that I was so unclear and stupid.”
Barr then expresses her frustration that no one will accept her apologies, despite the fact that she realized that she has “done wrong.” “I’m willing to accept what the consequences are,’ and I do, and I have. But they don’t ever stop. They don’t accept my apology or explanation,” she said.
In order to protect the jobs of everyone who worked on her titular show Roseanne, she agreed to a settlement that removed her financial involvement with the show. “I agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved, and I wish the best for everyone involved,” Barr said in a previous statement.
ABC announced last week that the spin-off show with be titled The Conners, which will air in the fall without Barr.
