Mel B Throws Drink At Simon Cowell, Walks Off ‘America’s Got Talent’ Stage, After He Makes Joke About Wedding

America’s Got Talent judge Mel B walked off stage after Simon Cowell made a tasteless joke comparing a contestant’s act to Mel B’s wedding night.

The stunt was by Demian Aditya, an escape artist whose act was underwhelming. He was handcuffed and placed into a wooden box, that had the lid nailed on. A rope supposedly holding up the box was placed over a blowtorch, giving Aitya the time it would take for the rope to burn through to escape. At the end, the box fell to the crowd’s horror, only to have Aditya show up behind the judges table. Mel B and Cowell immediately hit their buzzers, giving the contestant a red x.

Cowell’s insensitive joke came during the judges’ critiques. “I kind of imagine this would be like Mel B’s wedding night,” he began. Mel B looked shocked and stood before Cowell could get to the punchline. She took the lid off her drink and splashed it in his face before walking off stage. “A lot of anticipation, not much promise or delivery,” Cowell finished his quip.

“Mel B is out,” host Tyra Banks said quickly. “This is live TV people, y’all. Live TV.” Mel B is currently going through a divorce with estranged husband Stephen Belafonte, and the pair have been in and out of court over money issues. They were married for 10 years and share a 5-year-old daughter.

“He should know, if you say something inappropriate he’s gonna get stuff, like, thrown at him,” Mel B said in an interview following the incident. “In a friendly way… I made sure there was no ice in it this time, just fizzy water.”

In between later takes, Mel B told Cowell “he was an a–hole,” to which Cowell replied, “Oh, whatever.”
