Matthew McConaughey is letting us all in on his secrets to combatting hair loss, which the Magic Mike star said he began struggling with during the 90s.

Knowing McConaughey was once balding may be a surprise to some of us now, who see him now and can’t imagine the actor without that thick mane of hair. In an interview with Lad Bible, McConaughey pointed to films like The Wedding Planner as ones that display his thinning hair before he committed to growing it back.

“I got a picture, turn of the millennium party in 2000 in Jamaica,” McConaughey said, revealing what caused him to try in earnest to regrow his hair. “I was looking down laughing and there was a baseball-sized bald spot on the top of my head.” After that realization, he shaved his head to get a fresh start and began a simple routine while it came back.

McConaughey insists that the regrowth of his hair is from “No Propecia, no nothing, it was just manual labor.” He added that all he brought into his new hair care routine was rubbing a topical ointment into his scalp “once a day for 10 minutes.” The actor’s brand of choice is apparently Regenix.

“All I can tell you is it came back. I have more hair now than I did in 1999,” the Oscar winner plainly said. He added that some people have long thought that he got hair plugs, and he once stunned a doctor who was sure he had them.

McConaughey then added hilariously that the doctor told him another one in Beverly Hills had been taking credit for his new mane for years. “He’s busted, man!” the actor joked. The Interstellar star said he would never think about switching to a different oil now, saying, “I’m not taking that chance.”
