Drake has spoken out about the tragedy of the Astroworld Musical Festival that led to multiple deaths and hundreds of injured.
Drake made an appearance on Friday night’s show and was on stage performing with Travis Scott while mayhem that left eight dead continued. The crowd was around 50,000 people. The rapper hadn’t said anything regarding the incident but made a statement on Instagram.
“I’ve spent the past few days trying to wrap my mind around this devastating tragedy,” Drake wrote. “I hate resorting to this platform to express an emotion as delicate as grief but this is where I found myself. My heart is broken for the families and friends of those who lost their lives and for anyone who is suffering. I will continue to pray for all of them and will be out of service in any way I can. May God be with you all.”
Scott has gone on social media and expressed his feelings on the tragedy at his event. He tweeted, “I am absolutely devastated by what took place last night. My prayers go out to the families and all of those impacted by what happened at Astroworld Festival.”
Drake and Scott have been criticized for continuing with the concert while fans screamed for help and for them to stop the show. Local authorities called it a “mass casualty” event at 9:38 p.m. but the show didn’t stop until 10:15 p.m.
Scott went public and said he’s refunding the money for all festival ticket holders, covering funeral costs for those who died and canceling his upcoming Las Vegas show.
Houston Fire Chief Samuel Pena went on the Today Show Tuesday morning and appeared to put the blame for casualties on Scott and the event team.
‘Look, we all have a responsibility, everybody at that event has a responsibility, starting with the artist on down,” he said. “The artist has control of the crowd.”
