Calls Grow For Jeremy Clarkson To Be Fired From TV Jobs After ‘Vile’ Attacks On Meghan Markle In Op-Ed

ITV host Jeremy Clarkson is facing calls for resignation after he published a slew of insults against Meghan Markle in a column he wrote for The Sun.

In the article, which has since been removed from The Sun’s website, Clarkson wrote that he hates the Duchess of Sussex “on a cellular level” and that he lies awake at night “dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets” while crowds “throw lumps of excrement at her.”

The column was posted one day after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex released the final part of their Netflix series, Harry and Meghan, which documents their lives, particularly their decision to step away from royal obligations. Much of the show has focused on the British media’s coverage of the couple and the racist attacks against Markle.

The piece received over 17,500 complaints to the Independent Press Standards Organisation, breaking the record for the most complained about article ever. In the wake of the publication, Clarkson is facing pressure to step down from his role as host of ITV’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and Amazon’s Grand Tour.

MP Jon Nicolson published a letter he wrote to ITV’s chief executives in which he said Clarkson has a “disturbed mind.”

“Following grotesque comments made about the First Minister and the Duchess of Sussex, I do not believe Jeremey Clarkson should be allowed back on our screens,” Nicolson wrote.

Clarkson also took to Twitter to respond to the backlash, attributing his hateful comments to a “clumsy reference.”

“Oh dear,” he tweeted. “I’ve rather put my foot in it. In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people. I’m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in the future.”

His statement was not well received.

More than sixty members of the UK parliament wrote to the editor of The Sun condemning the column “in the strongest terms.” Clarkson’s vitriolic comments have sparked widespread outrage, from politicians to international Harry and Meghan viewers to his own family. Clarkson’s daughter posted on Instagram condemning the column.

“My views are and have always been clear when it comes to misogyny, bullying and the treatment of women by the media,” she wrote. “I want to make it very clear that I stand against everything that my dad wrote about Meghan Markle and I remain standing in support of those that are targeted with online hatred.”
