California could soon become the third state to decriminalize psychedelics after the state assembly passed a bill that would allow adults 21 and older to legally possess the drug in both plant and mushroom form.

Introduced by State Sen. Scott Weiner in 2021, Senate Bill 58 was passed in a 42-11 vote. It would decriminalize substances such as psilocybin, DMT and hallucinogenic mushrooms. Those who support the decriminalization and legalization of psychedelic drugs say it has mental health benefits by reducing symptoms of major depressive disorder.

Recent surveys show a growing nationwide support for psychedelic drug use reform. A U.C. Berkeley psychedelics survey suggested that 61% of voters support psychedelics for therapeutic reasons.

The bill would also establish a group to study psychedelics through the California Health and Human Services Agency. Senate Bill 58 also went through changes from the version passed through the Senate, as LSD and MDMA would not be legalized under this bill.
