New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell Says Mardi Gras Is Likely To Be Canceled In 2021

New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell thinks the cancelation of the city’s famous Mardi Gras festivities next year is likely.

In 2021, Mardi Gras was supposed to start on January 6, 2021 and end with Fat Tuesday on February 16.

“It’s something that we have to think about. It’s something that we have put on the table,” Cantrell told the Washington Post. “It will give me great pause right now before I commit to saying we are moving forward with Mardi Gras 2021.”

“We will let the data dictate the dates,” Cantrell said.

New Orleans has been consistently hosting its annual Mardi Gras for centuries.

It only been canceled just 13 times before, mostly during wartime or other social unrest. The holiday was canceled during World War I and World War II, and also in 1879 when yellow fever swept the city.

Mardi Gras has recently been blamed for the quick spread of the virus in early stages in New Orleans.
