A trailer for Netflix‘s The Crown has been released, reportedly the most expensive television show ever made.
The 10-part drama series following the life of Queen Elizabeth II as she “struggles to reconcile her personal life and public role,” cost around £100 million, or roughly $130 million. While Netflix is not billing the show as the most expensive ever made, the series is almost certainly the most expensive show to create per hour, spending an estimated $13 million per episode. Netflix’s The Get Down was most recently declared the expensive series ever, but with a $120 million budget and 12 episodes, The Crown spent about $3 million more per episode. Others of TV’s most expensive, including HBO’s Game of Thrones and Rome, are in the same camp as The Get Down.
Claire Foy stars as the Queen, with former Doctor Who star Matt Smith as Prince Philip. Also starring are John Lithgow as Sir Winston Churchill, Victoria Hamilton as Queen Mother, and Jared Harris as Elizabeth’s father King George VI.
The trailer begins with Elizabeth and Prince Philip learning that her King father has died and she has become Queen. When asked what her regnal name will be, as often British monarchs choose a name different from their own to rule under, the Queen replies, “Let’s not over-complicate matters unnecessarily, my name is Elizabeth.”
Peter Morgan, who was the writer behind 2006’s The Queen, is also writing this series. Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry is one of three directors, and describes the show as, “the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world – Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street – and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century.”
The press release for The Crown reveals that there are plans for more than a single season, with each season exploring “the political rivalries and personal intrigues across a decade of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, exploring the delicate balance between her private world and public life.”
