Morgan Wallen Is ‘Better Person’ After Racial Slur Incident, Darius Rucker Claims

Country star Darius Rucker believes it’s time to forgive fellow musician Morgan Wallen for his use of a racial slur in 2021.

Rucker, known for his work with Hootie & the Blowfish, expressed his belief that Wallen has grown since the incident. “I think Morgan’s become a better person,” Rucker told the Music Now podcast, citing his long-standing relationship with the younger artist.

The controversy began in February 2021 when a video of Wallen using the N-word was released. The fallout was swift, with radio networks pulling his music and his label suspending him. Award shows also barred Wallen from participation.

Despite these setbacks, Wallen’s career has thrived. His 2023 album One Thing at a Time broke records, and he embarked on a successful tour.

Rucker argued that full forgiveness remains elusive, pointing to Wallen’s continued exclusion from major country music awards.

“The fact that Morgan Wallen is not up for entertainer of the year and those things is crazy. No one’s selling more tickets than Morgan,” Rucker stated.

Following the 2021 incident, Wallen issued apologies and claimed to have sought help, including a stint in rehab. In subsequent interviews, he has emphasized personal growth and increased awareness of the impact of his words.

“There’s no excuse. I’ve never made an excuse. I never will make an excuse,” Wallen told reporters. “I’ve talked to a lot of people, heard stories [about] things that I would have never thought about because I wasn’t the one going through it.”

Wallen’s journey toward redemption hit another obstacle in April 2024 when he was arrested on felony charges for allegedly throwing a chair from a rooftop bar. He later took “responsibility” for his actions in a statement on social media.

As the country music community continues to grapple with issues of accountability and forgiveness, Rucker’s comments highlight the ongoing debate surrounding Wallen’s place in the industry. While some, like Rucker, advocate for forgiveness, others remain cautious about fully embracing the controversial star.

Wallen’s next court date related to the April incident is scheduled for August 15.
