Monopoly is releasing 30,000 special edition board games to celebrate its 80th anniversary, and 80 of those will contain real cash inside.
The Monopoly sets being sold with money inside are only being sold in France, and so, contain Euros. In celebration of Monopoly’s 80th anniversary, Hasbro asked players what they would rather find as a prize inside a Monopoly box – money or free hotel accommodations. 50.5% reportedly responded saying they wanted money, and Hasbro listened.
“We wanted to do something unique. When we asked our French customers, they told us they wanted to find real money in their Monopoly boxes,” said Hasbro France Brand Manager Florence Gaillard.
According to reports, one box, the jackpot Monopoly set, contains only real money, instead of the typical Monopoly money, making it worth a shocking €20,580. Meanwhile, 10 boxes contain €300 and the other 69 have €150 in real money.
To ensure maximum secrecy, Hasbro had the money mixed in with Monopoly money at a top secret site. However, the boxes containing real Euro notes reportedly weigh slightly heavier and have an extra bulge. While French Monopoly players celebrate the game’s big birthday with the chance of earning real money, the company will not be giving American fans the same chance. In the U.S., Hasbro will release a special edition of the classic board game with historic game tokens from Monopoly past – a lantern (1930s), a cannon (1950s) and a bathtub (1940s).
