The winner of Miss America 2020 Camille Schrier is set to hold her title for two years. Schrier will be the first winner of the competition to do so, as the organization announced Miss America 2021 will be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I realized now that I’m probably going to be a Jeopardy question,” Schrier told People. “It’s definitely incredible. As someone who is a nontraditional competitor in the Miss America organization … it’s kind of on-brand for me to do it this way.”
When Schrier refers to herself as a “non-traditional” Miss America competitor, she’s referring to her performance of the first-ever science demonstration in the talent portion of the competition. Since her victory, the PharmD student at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy has used her platform to promote drug safety amd abuse prevention and has encouraged STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education.
Schrier’s first year as Miss America has already been much different than she expected because of the pandemic. “This isn’t a situation that Miss America has ever been faced with,” she said. “This is a hundred-year-old organization, and I’m really the first person who’s been faced with this. How can I adapt? How can I figure out how to bring the work that I was doing on the ground, online?”
She answered her own question by teaming up with 3M and helping them launch a free online program, Science at Home, which provides STEM videos for teachers and students ages six to 12.
“I saw a need … and I wanted to help solve that problem for those parents and for the teachers. And then 3M felt the same way. I think that I’m alleviating some of the stress from the teachers, to be able to take over their classroom for a science lesson,” Schrier said.
