Minecraft for Microsoft HoloLens
Minecraft will be available for Oculus Rift sometime in 2016, meaning fans are one step closer to having Minecraft come to life.
Minecraft will be one of the first major games compatible with the Oculus Rift consul, which allows fans to experience virtual reality gaming. The news was announced at Thursday’s Oculus Connect 2 conference. Minecraft for Oculus Rift is expected to be available in 2016, and it’s unclear how Minecraft’s new partnership with Oculus will affect Microsoft’s plans to release the popular game with their own virtual reality device, the HoloLens.
According to Lydia Winters, Brand Director for Mojang — the company that produced Minecraft and happens to be owned by Microsoft — Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition will be supported by both Microsoft and Oculus Rift. Winters also gave a closer approximation of when fans can expect the game’s release, saying it should be hitting shelves this spring.
John Carmack of Oculus expanded on the deal between Minecraft and Oculus during his keynote speech at Oculus Connect 2 on Thursday, saying that he was a major advocate for the deal to go forward, even though it meant giving up some creative control to Microsoft.
“I think [Minecraft is] the single most important application that we can do for virtual reality, to make sure that we have an army of fanatic, passionate, supporters that will advocate why VR is great. This is why you want to do some of it every single day. It’s part of this infinite playability that we’re currently lacking in our current set of titles. So this is a huge, huge win for me,” Carmack told the crowd.
