Miley Cyrus made it clear at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards that she would not be deterred in shedding the once sugary image perpetuated by her Disney character Hannah Montana. For better or worse, her overtly sexualized turn on the Barclay’s Center stage stole the night.
Cyrus, 20, came on stage with an eerily child-like entrance down stairs that popped out of a giant teddy bear. Sporting a fuzzy bear-faced unitard, she then twerked her way across the stage, wagging her tongue in between verses and slapping fellow bear-outfitted peers on their likewise bouncing backsides. Massive, purple dancing bears rounded out the pop star's background dance crew.
Towards the end of Cyrus’ latest summer anthem, she peeled off the unitard to reveal a gold lamé bra and underwear ensemble. Then, Robin Thicke came on the stage for a performance of “Blurred Lines” that saw Cyrus take on the vocals normally sung by Pharrell Williams. The result: more gyrating than harmonizing.

From Taylor Swift to the Smith family – Will, Jada, Jaden and Willow – onlookers didn’t know what to think as the former Disney star dropped it low on married 36-year-old crooner Thicke dressed like Beetlejuice. Waving a foam finger about suggestively, Cyrus attempted to be as provocative as the YouTube banned “Blurred Lines” music video and nearly succeeded.

Unconcerned with those who would criticize her, Cyrus took to Twitter after the VMAs and posted a photo of herself wearing an orange tracksuit top with #BANGERZ written across the back, flipping the camera off with both hands. Her new album Bangerz is set to be released Oct. 8.
