Miley Cyrus Says She ‘Fell Off’ Sobriety During Pandemic

Miley Cyrus opened up about her journey staying sober in a recent interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music released on Monday. The singer confessed that the relapsed during the pandemic, but that she’s now two weeks sober.

“I fell off and I realized that I now am back on sobriety, two weeks sober, and I feel like I really accepted that time,” Cyrus said. “One of the things I’ve used is, ‘Don’t get furious, get curious.’ So don’t be mad at yourself, but ask yourself, ‘What happened?'”

Cyrus, 28, has faced her battle with substance use head-on and with admirable positivity. Her curious perspective helps to remove the stigma around substance use, since the act is not a moral failure and, in fact, relapsing is a very common challenge.

Back in June, Cyrus stated that she was six months sober. At the time, the star said she wanted to understand herself better and understand why she acts the way she does when she drinks. In the new interview, Cyrus elaborated on that, explaining that she doesn’t have a problem with alcohol, but rather the choices she makes when she’s drinking, which could lead to dangerous outcomes.

She said, “I don’t have a problem with drinking, I have a problem with the decisions I make once I go past that level [of being tipsy].”

The singer added, “Twenty-seven to me was a year that I really had to protect myself. That actually really made me want to get sober because we’ve lost so many icons at 27.” She was referencing artists like Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix who all died at age 27.

Though the pandemic may have been a snag in Cyrus’ journey to sobriety, the star is moving on and getting back on track.
