The Academy Awards is supposed to be the most celebrated occasion of the year for the stars, but at least one young starlet had something other than glitz and glamor on her mind during the festive event. Miley Cyrus, 19, received death threats on Twitter just hours before attending the iconic Vanity Fair after-Oscars party with boyfriend Liam Hemsworth, who will star in the upcoming Hunger Games.

The Hannah Montana star responded to the offensive tweets, which have now been taken down, reports E! The death threat tweet is missing entirely, but one of the messages still remains, retweeted. User "@thecyrusslut" called the singer / actress "so f–king hideous" and wrote that she "dresses like white trash."

Cyrus' responses to the insults are still up on the site, however. "U have nothing better 2 do than hate?" she wrote. "That saddens me. Im surrounded by love Im sorry 4 whatever happened 2 make u so bitter."

Later Cyrus turned her attention on Twitter for allowing the entire thing to escalate. "I wont tolerate someone telling me 2 die," she asserted. "Twitter needs to take some responsibility and make it a safe environment."

Despite the drama, Cyrus appeared to enjoy her evening. She later revealed that she hadn't been too preoccupied with the "haters" on Twitter. "Thank you Sir Elton John for such a lovely night," she wrote about attending the 20th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party with Hemsworth. "Now to Vanity Fair. I love all the glitz & glam of the oscars & celebrating such talent!"
